Transcriptions #21: Gratitude Library
12" x 24” x 1.5”
Original mixed media painting on canvas
Gratitude Library: After spending several years focused on gratitude, (with 2 published Gratitude Habit journals, and The Gratitude Habit blog, and Facebook page) I wanted to make sure that there was a presence of gratitude within the Transcriptions Series. Gratitude is universally embraced by cultures and religions around the world and has been since ancient times. Incorporated within this painting, are words for gratitude in close to 30 languages.
In designing the wide strip of canvas cloth, I wanted to create multiple strands of threads within the cloth rather than just at the sides. To my delight, each strip of cloth folded up at the bottom corners, in unison. The spaces created by the folds, were perfect for inserting the tiny handmade books. Each one displays a translation for gratitude in a different language.
One of the influences for the look and feel of this painting is from the papyrus plan of the Tomb of Ramesses IV, in Turin's Egyptian Museum.
The sides of the textured and painted gallery wrapped canvas are continued from the front. The signature and date can be found on the side.
